As people around the globe recognise Breast Cancer this October, the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation (BBCIF) hopes to raise $150 000 in its effort to eradicate the disease and find out why The Bahamas has such a high rate of Breast Cancer.
Invaluable Research & Education in The Battle Against Breast Cancer
Established in 2008, BBCIF’s research and testing work is a critical component of the organisation’s mission: to support the early detection of breast cancer and the improvement of breast cancer care in The Bahamas.
To date, BBCIF genetic counsellors have tested over 2100 women across the islands, revealing that The Bahamas ranks highest in the world for the prevalence of the BRCA gene which pre-disposes carriers to breast cancer.
“Because of research we were able to negotiate the cost of the test to $200 which the actual cost is $4,000,” says Melissa D. Major Executive Director. “We have tested over 2100 women in the Bahamas so far for the gene and we want to bring that number up to 3000 by the end of the year.”
Help Fight Breast Cancer this “Pinktober”
Here in The Bahamas we all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Now you can join the fight by helping BBCIF reach their genetic testing goals and expand their education and outreach program. Check the BBCIF website for some great fundraising events this Pinktober, including:
• Paint Da Streets Pink Fun Run Walk October 18th starting at Arawak Cay.
• Tea Talk Breast Cancer Forum October 21st at Handling Your Health Wellness & Rehab.
• October Saturdays at Freshmarket, Cost Rite or Solomons locations
You can also purchase a stunning 2015 Calendar of Breast Cancer Survivors for 20$ from the BBCIF office or at an October Saturdays event. It’s a beautiful testament to the courage and hope of Bahamian women who have experienced breast cancer first-hand.
