HGC TIPS | Preparing for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is officially amongst us, here are five HGC tips to help you prepare and safeguard your home for the unexpected.

Create an emergency plan:

Develop a comprehensive plan that includes evacuation routes, meeting points, and important contact information. Discuss this plan with your family members so that everyone is aware of the necessary steps to take during a hurricane. Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies such as; non-perishable foods, water, candles/flashlights, batteries, and first-aid items. One should also prepare an emergency kit for their pets, which should also include, food, water, lifejacket, medication, identification tag, collar, leash, and anything else that could be needed during an evacuation.

Reinforce windows and doors:

High winds and flying debris can cause significant damage to windows and doors during a hurricane. Consider installing storm shutters or boarding up windows with plywood to protect against breakage.

Clear your surroundings:

Trim tree branches that are close to your home and remove any dead or weak trees that could potentially fall and cause damage during a hurricane. Secure loose outdoor objects like patio furniture, grills, and garden tools.

Secure your roof:

Inspect your roof for loose shingles or tiles and repair them promptly. Consider reinforcing the roof with hurricane straps or clips to provide extra support. Reinforce or replace weak or damaged roof sheathing to minimize the risk of structural damage.

Invest in a generator:

Hurricanes often result in power outages that can last for days or even weeks. Having a backup power source, such as a generator, can help you maintain essential appliances, lighting, and communication devices.
